How many universes are there in the world

The story of physics has been one of an ever-expanding understanding of the sheer scale of reality, to the point where physicists are now postulating that there may be far more universes than just our own.

Chris Anderson explores the thrilling implications of this idea. Learn More. Additional Resources for you to Explore. Chris Anderson uses grains of sand on a beach as a way to help people get a sense of the number of stars in a galaxy. Create a visual display that gives some sense of the scale of our universe the size of the earth compared to the sun; the sun as one among many stars in our galaxy; the number of galaxies in our universe; the number of universes that may be out there.

Share your display with your community during Global Astronomy Month April or in connection with some other event at a local museum or planetarium. Science fiction writers have been interested in the idea of parallel universes for quite some time. Music Sometimes when I'm on a long plane flight, I gaze out at all those mountains and deserts and try to get my head around how vast our Earth is.

And then I remember that there's an object we see every day that would literally fit one million Earths inside it.

The sun seems impossibly big, but in the great scheme of things, it's a pinprick, one of about billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy, which you can see on a clear night as a pale, white mist stretched across the sky. And it gets worse. There are maybe billion galaxies detectable by our telescopes, so if each star was the size of a single grain of sand, just the Milky Way has enough stars to fill a 30 foot by 30 foot stretch of beach three feet deep with sand.

And the entire Earth doesn't have enough beaches to represent the stars in the overall universe. Such a beach would continue for literally hundreds of millions of miles.

Holy Stephen Hawking, that is a lot of stars. But he and other physicists now believe in a reality that is unimaginably bigger still. I mean, first of all, the billion galaxies within range of our telescopes are probably a minuscule fraction of the total.

Space itself is expanding at an accelerating pace. The vast majority of the galaxies are separating from us so fast that light from them may never reach us. Still, our physical reality here on Earth is intimately connected to those distant, invisible galaxies. Just to think about what's out there!!! May 20, Hi, Marcus! It is cool to think about! We're glad you liked this Wonder! You liked this one too, Hunter? Thanks for commenting, Wonder Friend! Sanai May 16, I think that we all learned a lot in this passage.

May 18, Kendell Mar 21, Mar 22, Nikau Mar 3, Mar 4, Feb 16, If you wanna know the answers to these questions then go to google. Diego Apr 12, Apr 12, Hi, Diego! Google is another resource to use to find more information! Feb 18, Ish Nov 13, This website is really helpful I just love it. This has everything I wanted to know about. Thanks for this amazing website!!! Nov 15, Oct 29, Sep 8, Ryan Feb 28, Okay so, in the movie will there be a part about the big bang theory?

I don't believe in it but it is still interesting. Wonderopolis Mar 3, Talia Jun 11, I can't believe there are that many galaxys and how did you find that out?

Wonderopolis Jun 11, Sandra Jun 9, WOW, space is so biiiigggggg. We didn't know there were so many planets like earth. Wonderopolis Jun 10, This is my first time to visit this website. I love it!!! Wonderopolis Jun 8, Czarny May 29, This article was about how Earth is the only known of planet that supports life and scientists are trying to find more planets that support life. Scientists think that there are about 40 billion planets that look like they are similar to Earth. Also in the video I learned that a movie will be made by IMAX in the spaceship as astronauts are in space.

Wonderopolis May 30, A Bzdula May 29, Seven astronauts whent on a mission to save the hubble space telescope. The telescope was in jeopardy. The astronauts had one chance to save it. This telescope was our key to see more into the universe.

There are countless planets in the universe we learn more everyday. Learning is great May 28, I have learned that we even have a telescope named Kepler searching for Earth-like planets. I thought we used the Hubble space telescope for everything.

Wonderopolis May 29, Azul R. May 27, I learned that scientists created the Kepler telescope in order to see whether or not there are other planets out there that exist that are similar to earth. I also learned that scientists believe that there are possibly over 9 billion stars that can support human life in the Milky Way galaxy.

I learned that scientists estimated at least 12 light years in order to travel to the closest planet in the Milky Way galaxy that is similar to earth as well.

Wonderopolis May 28, R rakoczy May 27, I learned that our probability is growing bigger and greater that there is life on other planets. Animals or humans or any other species.

But there is no proof. Wonderopolis May 27, Thank you for sharing your thinking about this Wonder. David Rosero May 25, I think we are not alone in the universe. For sure there might be life somewhere out there. It would be awesome to get to know another planet Earth life style in our galaxy.

Wonderopolis May 25, I have learned that We are not alone in the universe. There might be other types of life out there! It would be so selfish to think that it is only us in the universe. May 24, The most important thing I learned was that scientists say that there might be about 40 million planets just like Earth just in the Milky Way. I wonder about how much there can be outside of this galaxy. Wonderopolis May 24, Cooper May 23, That is great to read how many worlds there are!

Wonderopolis May 23, Taraszka May 22, I learned that scientists know what they know about space because of the telescopes and tools they use and some that even go to space and make pictures, such as the Kepler Telescope and the Hubble Space Telescope. Scientists believe there are over 40 billion more Earth - like planets. They also believe there is a planet for every star, 9 billion.

Scientists have many predictions, such as, the nearest Earth - like planet is 12 light years away, 72 trillion miles. This article was so interesting. Maria May 22, Dear Wonderopolis, Thank you for the facts. I learn a lot about How many worlds are there? I thank tomorrow's wonder is all about spining around. Sinserly, Maria. I have seen the Hubble movie in an Imax theter in the Smithsonian air and space museum, and it was awesome!!!! Wonderopolis May 22, Cori May 22, Dear wonderopolis I love the wonder because it taught me a lot more about the earth and about the huge galaxy the wonder was great.

Sincerely Cori. Thanks, Cori! We're glad you thought this Wonder was out of this world!!
