Liverpool won the match From early , Gerrard began to adopt a deeper defensive midfield role- something that he revealed Brendan Rodgers had wanted to implement since he took over as Liverpool manager 18 months earlier.
He performed well in the new role again on 8 Februrary as Liverpool beat Arsenal at Anfield, however he did concede a penalty with a late tackle on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain that Mikel Arteta converted. He added two assists to his name during the match, as Martin Skrtel first converted his free kick and then his corner to give Liverpool an early lead. Four days later, Gerrard showed his coolness and calmness as he converted a 90th minute penalty in a win at Fulham. Gerrard and the rest of the Liverpool team celebrated the goal with the fans wildly, as the three points put Liverpool firmly into the title race, and potentially on the road to a surprise triumph that would finally add the last piece of silverware to Gerrard's trophy collection.
Gerrard also provided the assist for Daniel Sturridge's goal in the match, with a curling ball over the top of the defence. In the following game, Gerrard scored again from the penalty spot, pulling a goal back as Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup with a loss away to Arsenal.

The goals took Gerrard past Kenny Dalglish into sixth place in Liverpool's goalscoring charts.
On 27 April , Liverpool hosted Chelsea in the third-to-last game of the season with the Reds in control of the title race. Gerrard however slipped in first half injury time to enable Chelsea striker Demba Ba to bare down on goal and gift the visitors a lead. On 11 May , Gerrard assisted both Liverpool goals in their end-of-season victory at home to Newcastle, both times with in-swinging free-kicks.
The Reds ended their season in second place to Man City. In the new season , Gerrard had to wait until only the third game to open his goalscoring account- again with a penalty. The goal was his 40th in European competition- the most amount of goals ever scored by a Liverpool player in European competition. On 27 September in the derby game at home to Everton, Gerrard netted a free-kick to put Liverpool ahead.
Unfortunately however the Reds would concede a last-minute equaliser to draw the match. Gerrard continued in his deep-lying role in midfield, however with the Reds' season, and particularly their defensive displays faultering badly, Gerrard's ability to protect the back four came under increasing scrutiny from fans, who also questioned the wisdom behind Rodgers' continued selection of the nowyear-old to play 90 minutes so often.
Rodgers defended his captain, however admitted to considering deploying Gerrard back into a more advanced role. On 29 November , Rodgers appeared to concede that Gerrard's continued inclusion in the starting XI was not justifiable, and he was named on the substitutes' bench for the Reds' win over Stoke, despite this representing the 16th anniversary of Gerrard's first team debut.
Gerrard came off the bench midway through the second half as Liverpool searched for their winner, and Rodgers hinted after the match that this may become the primary role Gerrard occupies in the Liverpool squad in the future.
After the match, both Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers were forced to publicly deny that they had fallen out. Soon after, Liverpool confirmed that they had made Gerrard the offer of a new contract, with his current deal expiring in the summer of The media reported that Gerrard was to take some time to decide whether to sign the deal, with his expected playing time over the next seasons the key to his decision. Gerrard scored Liverpool's second goal, slotting home from close range after Leicester captain Wes Morgan deflected the ball into his path. This was Gerrard's first goal from open play since January and his first ever against Leicester City. With the Reds down to 10 men and trailing , with a win needed to secure progression to the next round, Gerrard netted a free kick with 10 minutes remaining, sparking memories of his heroics against Olympiakos almost 10 years earlier to the day.
Unfortunately, Liverpool could not go on to find the winner, and bowed out of the Champions League. On 1 January , Gerrard scored two penalties in Liverpool's home tie with bottom club Leicester.
Despite this, Liverpool produced a poor performance and allowed their lead to slip, ultimately drawing the match A number of fans criticised Brendan Rodgers' decision to pair Gerrard with Lucas in midfield as calls were still made for Gerrard to have a reduced role in the Liverpool team.
That evening however, media reports were rife that Gerrard was set to announce that he would not be signing a contract extension with Liverpool and would leave at the end of the season.
The following morning, Gerrard confirmed this to be the case. In a statement, Gerrard stated "This has been the toughest decision of my life and one which both me and my family have agonised over for a good deal of time. I'm going to carry on playing and although I can't confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won't be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool- that is something I could never contemplate.
My decision is completely based on my wish to experience something different in my career and life. Brendan Rodgers praised Gerrard, saying "It is almost an impossible task to find the words to appropriately sum up Steven Gerrard and his importance to Liverpool. This is an era where the word 'legend' is vastly overused, but in his case it actually doesn't do him justice. Gerrard's first goal was a header following a cross from Javier Manquillo, and his second was a free kick in the second half.
On 4 February , Gerrard made his th appearance for Liverpool, playing the duration of the side's away win over Bolton in the FA Cup. On 10 February , Gerrard scored a penalty to help Liverpool claim a win over top 4 rivals Tottenham at Anfield. On 22 March , to the surprise of some, Gerrard was left out of the starting line-up to face Manchester United at Anfield. With the Reds a goal down, Gerrard was brought on at half time.
He sparked the crowd up with a fiery challenge, but then stamped on the leg of Ander Herrera, receiving a straight red card after just 38 seconds. United eventually won the game by two goals to one. After the game, Gerrard apologised to the players and fans for letting them down.
On 2 May , Gerrard scored the winner against QPR in a win at Anfield, heading home from close range after a Philippe Coutinho corner fell straight into the path of his run.
This came just after Gerrard had a penalty saved. The next weekend he scored the equaliser in a draw at Chelsea, just his second goal against the London side. The skipper headed in at the far post from a Jordan Henderson free kick. On 16 May , he made his final appearance at Anfield against Crystal Palace, he was given a guard of honour by both sets of players. Disappointingly for the skipper, the game ended to the away side.
But in Istanbul he helped to inspire a comeback that remains unbelievable. Trailing to AC Milan at half-time, it was Gerrard's sublime header on 54 minutes that kickstarted a turnaround which ended with a sensational win on penalties. In the aftermath of Champions League glory, 'Captain Fantastic' put an end to speculation about a move away from Anfield by committing to a fresh contract.
With his future sorted, the skipper went on to plunder 23 goals in 53 games the following season. That campaign culminated in another FA Cup success, Benitez's charges defying the odds to recover from the shock of an early deficit to West Ham United in Cardiff.
Having set up the Reds' first goal, Gerrard equalised at and later shook off cramp to wallop a last-minute volley from 35 yards into the bottom corner to keep his side in the contest. Shortly afterwards, he hoisted aloft the trophy. Milan took European Cup revenge in the showpiece, but the subsequent signing of Fernando Torres and the tandem he and Gerrard formed led to the latter's most irrepressible period.
He reached a century of Liverpool goals in October , racking up 24 throughout the season to scoop the Football Writers' Player of the Year accolade. Sadly, his tremendous haul was not enough to secure the Premier League title that would always elude him, with the Reds narrowly pipped to the post by rivals United. A tumultuous time followed, on the pitch and off, with Benitez replaced by Roy Hodgson as manager and the ownership of the club changing hands too. Kenny Dalglish was tasked by Fenway Sports Group with steering the team back on course at the outset of and though Gerrard had to battle injury setbacks, he experienced some memorable moments under 'The King'.
In February , he led Liverpool out at Wembley for the first time and despite missing a penalty in the League Cup final shootout with Cardiff City, he climbed the steps to claim the silverware. Then, just a few weeks later, he scored a mesmerising hat-trick in a win over Everton at Anfield, a feat that hadn't been achieved since A sad day for real football fans. A loyal, courageous and game winning Captain. A Steven Gerrard into his prime would get into any team in the world still right now.
Thank you Stevie Gerrard! Comment posted by Pharaoh, at 24 Nov Pharaoh. Thank you Steven for all your services to club and country. Wish you ended at Liverpool to remain a one club footballer.
Best of luck with your future plans, which I am sure if you approach with the same professionalism and commitment you showed as a player you will be on to more great things. Please don't become a pundit. Not sure his boundless enthusiasm and sunny disposition will translate well to TV.
He has that ability, along with Andy Murray, to make you feel miserable. Comment posted by Pabs, at 24 Nov Pabs. Like him or loathe him, Gerrard was probably one of the best English midfielders of the last 20 years.
Let's also not forget that during his footballing career, he never once changed his hairstyle. Comment posted by Chris, at 24 Nov Chris. I don't know why players like this get abuse on comment sections like this.
He's had a great career and even in the States, where he was struggling with the pace of that league, he didn't whine about it and helped the younger players at LA. Put club rivalries to one side for a minute and show some respect and I'm not a Liverpool supporter, in case you're wondering.
I'm a Manchester United fan, so on one hand I really dislike Gerrard for the fact he played for Liverpool for the majority of his career. However, you can't deny he has been one hell of a player for them through the years and deserved more from his career that he got when it comes to silverware - for club and country. There are plenty of youngsters who would do well to follow his lead. Comment posted by Koolaly, at 24 Nov Koolaly.
As a neutral I am pleased to see a number of positive comments and respect about the greatness of Stevie from MU supporters who clearly understand the concept of sport and sportsmanship. I worry that younger generations are too quick to make ignorant comments about great players who don't play for their team.
Players like Steven Gerrard transcend the game in maturity, humility and character. The fact that this post is being inundated with so many bitter blues and mancs speaks volumes for the impact Stevie had. Comment posted by Luke, at 24 Nov Luke. On a number of occasions he single handedly dragged liverpool to the win. Deserves all the plaudits. From a Utd supporter. Not just a Premier League great but a true legend of the game. The amount of games he's dragged his, often average Liverpool side through is quite phenomenal on those big European nights.
I genuinely believe with his talent he could've challenged for 'the greatest player of all time' had he moved to Madrid, but that's just testament to his loyalty and leadership for LFC.
I salute you. Comment posted by U, at 24 Nov U Good luck Stevie. Comment posted by jamessnow, at 24 Nov jamessnow. I'm a complete neutral and reading some of the comments on here my thoughts are "you have to blame the parents" Some of you fools need to get a life or at least get out and meet real people.
Gerrard - a talent that has rarely been matched for club or country.
